Steamboat Springs Early Childcare Center

Conceptual Design Study

The State is working in partnership with Routt County and the City of Steamboat Springs on an undeveloped 1.1 acre site owned by the Colorado Department of Transportation consisting of drainage and wetlands areas. The site is adjacent to the Community Center and the Core Trail. It will be potentially developed for a 36 unit housing project as well as a first floor early childcare center of approximately 11k sq. ft.

Steamboat Springs and Routt County partnered on a childcare center feasibility study in 2021 and 2022.  This study provided information on ideal configurations for a child care center, financial pro formas, and potential sites.  One of the sites identified was a CDOT owned property on Lincoln Avenue, adjacent to the Steamboat Springs Community Center.  Based on the feasibility study, the City/County Childcare team reached out to CDOT to identify if there were any opportunities on the identified property.  A meeting at the site identified several options for how the state, City and County could work together to develop childcare, as well as housing for snowplow drivers and childcare workers on the site.

Goals

To develop new childcare slots in Steamboat Springs, with an emphasis on infant and toddler spaces.
To develop housing for snow plow drivers and child care workers.

Scope

Partnership formation, conceptual design, operational planning, IGA development, financial planning, and decision making regarding construction of a new building that houses childcare and provides apartments for the local community.
